Nelson Mandela is an activist for South Africa and a former south african president who died in 2013, and has put his artwork on sale. No, this isn’t the sentence that I thought I’d write today.
The paintings depicting his prison prison prison, which he spent the majority of his 27-year prison sentence in, were widely available in the public for a few years now. In spite of that, collectors can spend up to three hundred dollars and say that they own them on the blockchain. There isn’t actually a limit on how many will be sold, the collection consisting of how many can be shifted in a six-hour window.
It’s a simple truth: If only there existed enough time for Game Companies to Know NFTs Were Bad Before The Backlash, You’ll Not Know A Few Who Did.
The Guardian reported that the auction company Bonhams is behind the auction. They have the support of Mandela’s daughter, but their reasoning doesn’t explain why they chose NFTs.
Giles Peppiatt, director for modern and contemporary African art, said that the collection is for “new audiences that don’t probably go to art galleries and museums.” (Note: These pieces are sold separately on the Internet.)
“These people live big life by phone or the internet, and they have enormous amounts of money available and are also collectors”, said Peppiatt. It becomes a lot more important part of the art world.
They will be NFTs and oneself. Of course, youth are probably less likely to go to a museum. But this piece is currently available for appreciation, without the blockchain saying you are possessing a certain right.
Nelson Mandela isn’t the only person who has passed through since his likeness is used to sell NFTs. Last year, Stan Lee’s work was sold as a result of this fraud, and even his personal twitter account promoted the sale of the product. Many people found this disturbing considering that the artist never stated his opinions on NFTs and he’s a practice that the majority of the community’s is against.
