This Might be the Shadiest Contract in Esports

by devaccess

The Melbourne Mavericks are an Australian Overwatch Contenders Series team that are completely screwed up at an ownership level.

By that we mean the owner allegedly placed bets on pre-recorded matches, signed players to barely legal contracts, didn’t pay those players, and uh has been MIA for the last two months.

Seriously, apparently nobody on the team has heard from him since August.

These guys might not have a team to play on if this doesn’t get figured out real quick.

It is always smart to have someone read over your contract.

it's scum like this that makes esports look bad. why haven't the australians left him to be eaten by the dingos is anyone's guess, but i suspect it's more to not endanger a dingo's life from eating such a foul creature

Do these people not know how to read or anything? My god i've seen so many people like these people fuck themselves over because they couldn't read lmao. All the bull shit they are going through they legit agreed to it via this contract. Its hard to feel bad for people when they fuck themselves over. Is that guy scum sure but hell he didn't scam them everything thats going on monetary wise is in the contract.

This is disgusting but.. did these guys even read the contract? Also 50-150 bucks is quite shit for such a big scene. We’ve made more in RoE (which has about a 10k playerbase) honestly don’t sign ANYTHING unless you are safe and it has good value to you. They (orgs) need you more than you need them.

Under Australian contract law, whenever a contract stipulates that the signee must forfeit basic rights, such as those outlined in the National Employment Standards, the contract is then null and void. Unless my understanding has gotten hazy, how did nobody catch that and unravel the whole thing?

I find this weird intro gimmick where they stop looking at the camera to focus on their phone or the script for less than 2 seconds and then they're back to the camera again as really cringey.

The 6k transfer fee is in his right to do, there are no restrictions for a contender player for a team outside of owl, so the contract regulates that, for owc – > owl instead you are regulated from the owl rules and not your own contract (THIS is fucked up honestly)

Contenders has always sounded like the Wild West to me. Some big orgs that have structure and support to help a team or player flourish, others who are just mates and playing for fun.

I dont know why you guys are all mad about the dude who made the contract, they had the choice of signing or not signing. they said it themselves " WHENEVER WE ASKED FOR SOMETHING TO BE CHANGED INSTEAD OF CHANGING IT HE WOULD JUST TALKED THROUGH WHY IT WAS THERE IT GOT OT HE POINT WHERE WELL HE HADNT CHANGED ANYTHING AND THE SEASON WAS GONNA START" and hes laughing about it.. fucking moron they deserve what they signed for.

If you think esports will ever be beyond this kind of thing you are living with your head in the clouds. Shady business exists and will continue to exist in any industry where there is money to be made until the end of time.

Overwatch is a paid scene, an artificially grown scene, never trust artificially grown scenes.
CS, Dota, Starcraft, organic scenes grown by the community itself into an esport.

All the rest are just casual games or cash-cows, or both, artificially grown scenes where the developer pays for the game to be displayed, it's quite sad actually, like COD, LoL, hearthstone and such.

The shadier business practice is banning a player who wants freedom for his people. Then banning the commentators too.
Boycott Blizzard

I don't quite understand why the rule regarding the transfers is brought up – this rule have absolutely nothing with this whatsoever. That rule only exists to protect the players and the OWL teams, to make sure that top level talent got a clear path into OWL, without being screwed by shady contracts.

It have absolutely nothing to do with transfers in between teams in contenders, this is an area where the player is not protected and is therefor themselves responsible to make sure that the terms are fair. is it optimal? no, but at least give delicate matters like these the proper respect they deserve. This is far from the most shadiest contract in esport if the terms you have laid out is the most egregious ones; does that make them okai? – ofc not. But at least threat them with the respect they deserve if you are gone report on it.

Basically the dude says that he has a name and if you play in his team he owns you. What a little shit.
