Murray vs Etcheverry Prediction (R2): 2023 ATP Basel Tennis

by Shane Lambert

Andy Murray will face Tomas Martin Etcheverry at the 2023 ATP Basel tennis event this week. The match is expected to be on the order of play for Wednesday from the 500-series in Switzerland. This will be a second-round match in the tournament, a competition that is also known as the 2023 Swiss Indoors Basel. My Murray vs Etcheverry prediction is that the latter player will win at least one set in what could be a competitive match.

Andy Murray vs Tomas Martin Etcheverry Head-to-Head Series

These two players have met just one time in the past. Murray handed Etcheverry a loss in a match that was played on similar conditions at Indian Wells 2023. Both Indian Wells and Basel are hard-court venues. However, Basel is an indoor tournament while Indian Wells forces players to deal with the elements. Murray won that match in three sets 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 in an early-round affair.

Both players enjoyed confidence-building wins in the first round. Murray took out Yannick Hanfmann in straight sets. Etcheverry eliminated Sebastian Korda from the draw in a three-set contest. Korda had been a very significant player in the last two events that he had entered so that was a nice win for Etcheverry.

There is a big opportunity in Basel this week for whoever survives the Murray vs Etcheverry contest. The winner will be in the quarterfinals in a section of the draw that features a struggling Holger Rune. At the time of writing, he had not started his opening match yet. But Rune’s recent struggles and his status as the top seed make the entire first quarter in Basel wide open.

Murray vs Etcheverry Prediction: Etcheverry to win a set

The oddsmakers are liking Murray in this match at -225 on the moneyline (bet365). The former World No. 1 has entered Basel on good rest. Also, Etcheverry has never done anything all too convincing of late — except beat Korda in the last round.

If this match ends up being competitive, then Etcheverry’s youth might work in his favor. He is only 24 while Murray is now 36 years old. Perhaps that will help the younger player in a close and competitive set.

Etcheverry also has a pretty good serve, which should help him a lot in the indoor venue where you don’t deal with any wind. His serving should keep him competitive in any set that is played. My recommendation for this match is to take the Etcheverry to win at least one set at -175 with bet365 in a match that looks very tricky for Murray.
