Medvedev won his first-round match in Dubai over Alexander Shevchenko, 6-3, 7-5. The betting tip I had for the match was correct, which held that Shevchenko would win over 7.5 games.
Otherwise, there is not much else to report on with Daniil Medvedev and recent matches. Before Dubai, he was idle on tour following the 2024 Australian Open. He did make the final in that tournament, which currently stands as the only complete event of his 2024 season so far.
Lorenzo Sonego’s Recent Tennis Results
Sonego defeated Nagal Sumit in the first round. This was an outcome I had wrong as I felt Sumit would win the match. It went to three sets with Sonego running away with it late.
Sonego has not played well so far this season. Even in the last round, he had a bad patch against Nagal, a low-ranked player. Sonego is just 3-6 in main draw matches, with two of his wins coming in Australia. The Italian did make the Dubai quarterfinals last season, winning a match against Felix Auger-Aliassime when the Canadian was ranked in the Top Ten.
Sonego will need to pull off another win against a Top Ten player to duplicate his result. However, he does not appear to be in good enough form to beat Medvedev in this upcoming match.
Medvedev vs Sonego Prediction: Medvedev 2-0
Medvedev had five double faults in his first-round match. That might be due to a timing issue as he took a month off. He did surrender a couple of breaks in the match and had to offset those with five breaks of his own.
But I don’t think Sonego is playing well enough to take advantage of Medvedev if the Russian is only a tad off of his best game. Furthermore, I think Medvedev had a great match in the last round from other perspectives. Mainly, he was playing an improving player after a month off from competitive matches. I am looking for Medvedev to be clinical against Sonego with a 2-0 result at -225 (bet365).
