Epic Reduces Spider-Man Mythic from 80 to 20 Uses in Competitive

by Matt Pryor

Epic Games has revealed a significant change to the Spider-Man Mythic item in competitive playlists.

Morale in the competitive Fortnite scene has been at an all-time low of late. Alleged cheaters are plaguing tournaments, players dislike the Stinger SMG and some of the best competitors ever such as Rocco “Saf” Morales have quit the game. Regardless, there have been some outstanding tournaments and, despite the negative sentiment, the cream still rises to the top.

Contrary to popular belief, Epic Games is listening to communal feedback. Today, the developers announced a significant change to an item deemed problematic by the tournament scene. The polarizing Spider-Man Web Shooters now have 20 uses instead of 80 in competitive playlists. It’s undoubtedly a sign of improvement as players continue adapting to the meta in Chapter 3 Season 1.

Spider-Man Mythic Change

The news arrived alongside hotfix 19.10, which added the new Pizza Party item into Fortnite. Epic used the minor update to reduce the Spider-Man Mythic gadget from 80 uses to 20 in Arena Mode and tournaments.

While it was not the solution some players wanted, this change forces players to use the Web Shooter wisely when it’s in their possession. Epic will more than likely not remove the item outright since Spider-Man is the season’s lead drawing force. Even so, the adjustment shows Epic is trying to meet competitive players halfway.

How will the Change Affect Competitive Gameplay?

The sizable complaint behind the Web Shooter in competitions revolves around it essentially breaking mobility. It favors those who prioritize one of the 32 Spider-Man Mythic spawn locations around the map. Everyone who fails to secure one has to hope that they find a Launch Pad, eliminate an opponent who possesses the Mythic item or expend their materials to rotate effectively.

Epic’s reduction from 80 to 20 uses means players might choose to save their Web Shooter until the fifth or sixth zone. Otherwise, they could carry two items in their inventory to give themselves 40 total uses. Competitive Fortnite analyst and caster – Reisshub – believes it’s a good compromise. We’ll ultimately have to see how this change translates to tournaments to decide whether it truly makes a difference.

On that note, be sure to check out the various scrims available to watch on Twitch and the Duo Cash Cup Finals tomorrow to see if the meta improves. Those in casual playlists can still enjoy 80 uses on the Spider-Man Mythic item.
