The League of Legends World Championship (Worlds 2019) continues to drive multiple channels into the Top 10 as the tournament nears its conclusion.
This weekend also saw several channels buoyed by the excitement surrounding new game announcements at BlizzCon 2019, including a sequel to Overwatch.
Finally, A lighter esports schedule allowed several streamers to ride the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare release into the Top 10.
The following channels are ranked according to the total number of hours watched on Twitch from Monday to the following Sunday, with data compiled using TEO Access.
G2 Wins at Home
Worlds 2019 has whittled its field down to just two teams following last weekend’s semifinal matches. With only two matches to play during this phase, the main Riot Games Twitch channel generated fewer hours watched (3.19M) that it did last week (4.60M) when four matches took place. However, the semifinal bout between Europe’s sole remaining team, G2 Esports, and perennial favorite SK Telecom T1 reached a peak of 538.6K max concurrent viewers (CCV), up from the previous weekend’s 397.5K max CCV.
Having dethroned the team with the most world championship wins to its name, if G2 wins this coming weekend in Paris, it will not only become the first European organization to win a Worlds title since 2011, but will also become the first team in League of Legends history to win all four major championships in a single year (colloquially referred to as the Grand Slam).
Blizzcon Brings the Viewers to Asmongold
Blizzard Entertainment’s annual fan convention, BlizzCon, draws plenty of viewers to the company’s own channels as it reveals what’s next for its popular game franchises like Overwatch, World of Warcraft, and Hearthstone. However, many Twitch viewers prefer to watch these announcements take place while also seeing the immediate reaction of their favorite influencers.
This phenomenon, known as “co-streaming,” allowed Zach “Asmongold” (last name unknown) to climb to the number two spot on this week’s Top 10. Asmongold has been a fixture in the Top 10 since the launch of World of Warcraft Classic, becoming by far the game’s most-watched streamer. But the BlizzCon broadcasts were a significant spike for the streamer, as Asmongold generated over 1M hours watch in just three days.
Answering the Call
Last week, Herschel “Dr DisRespect” Beahm IV was the beneficiary of a major viewership boost from the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Now in its second week, the game continues to perform well on Twitch, and has helped new streamers rejoin the Top 10. In a week dominated by esports channels and BlizzCon, Jaryd “Summit1g” Lazar and Saqib “Lirik” Zahid both generated over 900K hours watched due in part to their broadcasts of the latest CoD.
