Worlds 2022 Group Stage: Day 7 Recap

by Rohat Dicle Kılınç

The penultimate day of Groups at Worlds 2022 is done and we have the final standings for Group C.

The third group at Worlds 2022 has been finalized. We got another set of great games third day in a row, including the biggest upset of the tournament so far. GAM Esports managed to find a win over Top Esports, effectively eliminating them from the event. Rogue also continued the Week 2 trend of LEC, losing two games back-to-back and having to play a tiebreaker against DRX for the 1st seed.

Rogue vs GAM Esports

GAM came into the game ready to fight, getting the first blood with an early top dive. They also controlled the early game lanes great which gave them another two kills at the Herald fight. Fortunately for RGE, they managed to steal the Herald, but GAM also took the first two drakes for a fast potential Infernal Soul. But GAM couldn’t hold onto their early game lead as RGE matched their mid game moves pretty well and always had the answer. Even with GAM getting the second Herald, RGE had a 1k gold lead. GAM also couldn’t capitalize on their drake lead and gave up the next two, delaying their Soul even more. The game-breaking team fight happened in the mid game when GAM chased down RGE into their jungle, but RGE kited back well and got four kills into a Baron secure. GAM tried to find favorable fights after this point but RGE lead had grown above 5k with a better scaling comp, so they didn’t have much success.

  • Teams: RGE 1 – 0 GAM
  • Time: 30:35
  • Kills: 19 – 9
  • Turrets: 10 – 2
  • Gold: 62.2k – 49.5k
  • Dragons: 3 – 2
  • Barons: 1 – 0

GAM Esports vs Top Esports

With their chances of moving forward now very slim, GAM came to Game 2 with a draft focused around Levi, with a rare pick of Karthus. They played a very objective-focused early game getting the first Herald and the first two drakes. GAM also found multiple kills around the map and did a very good job at matching TES at skirmishes. Still, TES was able to get some leads through laning and used them to get back into the game during the mid game. They managed to stop the GAM’s drake stacking and got themselves a 3k gold lead even while they were behind on kills. Despite TES’s lead, the 5v5s were quite close thanks to the massive damage output from Levi and Sty1e which led to GAM securing Mountain Soul. TES found a Baron and but couldn’t crack the GAM base with it, and it started to look like the game would be decided at the Elder, which GAM had control over the objective as they found a teamfight victory before it. The Elder was the point where the game just descended into madness. First, JackeyLove managed to steal the Elder and TES got an almost ace. They pushed the Nexus but Kiaya delayed them just enough for GAM to get the kills, and then push for their own end. They killed the Nexus towers just as TES members spawned, but the late game damage of GAM was enough to kill the Nexus and give themselves a chance to advance.

  • Teams: GAM 1 – 0 TES
  • Time: 41:29
  • Kills: 21 – 17
  • Turrets: 7 – 8
  • Gold: 72.7k – 76.9k
  • Dragons: 4 – 2
  • Barons: 0 – 1

DRX vs Rogue

Another game another treat in the draft! DRX locked in Heimerdinger support and RGE answered with the much-anticipated Nasus support from Trymbi. The bot lane matchup was in favor of DRX who locked their opponents under their tower in the early game. All the while the DRX top side got the advantage in a 3v3 to get the first two kills and the first Herald. DRX also controlled the mid game and was the team that pushed the game’s tempo as they found the kills and were stacking drakes. And after an extended 5v5 in the top lane where Zeka shined, DRX aced RGE to secure the Mountain Soul. DRX then found a couple of picks, the first two leading to a Baron and the next two giving them a chance to break Nexus towers. With the gold lead over 12k at this point, DRX was able to win the game which also eliminated GAM from contention.

  • Teams: DRX 1 – 0 RGE
  • Time: 30:12
  • Kills: 20 – 4
  • Turrets: 10 – 1
  • Gold: 63.7k – 47.6k
  • Dragons: 4 – 0
  • Barons: 1 – 0

DRX vs GAM Esports

Now out of contention, GAM gave us another great draft with Anivia mid and Syndra support, and BeryL was once again on Heimer. Both teams again showed a lot of attention to bot side in the early game with GAM finding first blood with their first gank. GAM then tried to dive top lane, but a cross-map Ashe arrow from Deft saved the play, giving DRX three kills and a big lead. DRX was also able to push back in the bot lane a little bit more and they found some kills down there as well. But GAM still was on point on drakes as they still secured a Hextech Soul point despite losing the fights. The downside of losing these drake fights was that DRX then was able to get a Baron and push their lead to near 10k. DRX took the secondary towers with their first Baron, and then came back with their second one to target the inhibitors. Just when they were about to take all three of them, GAM decided to engage and make a last stand. Unfortunately for the VCS team it did not work out and they got aced, which meant DRX secured a place in the Quarters for themselves.

  • Teams: DRX 1 – 0 GAM
  • Time: 31:28
  • Kills: 19 – 7
  • Turrets: 11 – 1
  • Gold: 65.5k – 49.2k
  • Dragons: 1 – 3
  • Barons: 2 – 0

Top Esports vs Rogue

The entertaining drafts continued well into the day as we got a Draven/Blitzcrank vs Caitlyn/Lux matchup in the bot lane. And it delivered as JackeyLove’s Draven found three early kills in six minutes. With a near 3k gold lead, TES was also able to control the early objectives. Mid game was dominated by the TES bot lane, especially with roaming around the map with Blitzcrank. TES then found a great fight to get themselves the Soul point and a Baron. RGE responded by looking for a pick on Wayward in the top lane, but while they were doing that TES found two kills in the bot lane and started to push for the end. At this point, JackeyLove was too ahead and RGE couldn’t hold TES back from ending both the game and their Worlds 2022 run with a bang.

  • Teams: TES 1 – 0 RGE
  • Time: 24:49
  • Kills: 19 – 8
  • Turrets: 8 – 1
  • Gold: 53.7k – 39.4k
  • Dragons: 3 – 0
  • Barons: 1 – 0

Top Esports vs DRX

The last regularly scheduled game of the day was a must-win for DRX if they wanted to escape a tiebreaker with RGE. The game itself started very slow with both teams farming in the early game till the Herald where they traded one kill each, but DRX came ahead with the Herald. DRX was able to hold onto their lead, but it started diminishing in the mid game as TES started to make some moves and found a couple of kills, also with Tian stealing two first drakes of the game. TES then found two kills on the mid/jungle of DRX after they failed a dive at the top lane and turned it to a Baron, which put them in the gold lead. After this, DRX’s play was too passive as TES took full control of the map. They took the Hextech Soul and another Baron, then started sieging the DRX base. They found one last dive onto DRX and ended the game, giving us a tiebreaker between RGE and the Korean 4th seed for the Group C leadership.

  • Teams: TES – DRX
  • Time: 34:04
  • Kills: 15 – 3
  • Turrets: 9 – 3
  • Gold: 64.8k – 54.7k
  • Dragons: 4 – 0
  • Barons: 2 – 0
