League of Legends led all content in June, but will it be able to continue that dominance as Riot Games’ new auto-battler game mode Teamfight Tactics pulls attention away from the multiplayer online battle arena?
The following titles are ranked according to the total number of hours watched on Twitch from May 1-31, with data compiled using TEO Access.
Year-Over-Year
As Fortnite continues to see a drop in year-over-year viewership on Twitch, other forms of content have continued to grow. League of Legends led the way in June as four forms of content produced more than 50M hours watched including “Just Chatting” and Grand Theft Auto V, up from just two titles last year.
Fortnite’s decline could be seen as more of a market correction than anything though. Last year the game’s 1.11B hours watched for the full year more than doubled every form of content on Twitch except for LoL. Epic Games’ battle royale title also had over 200M hours watched more than the more established multiplayer online battle arena game by Riot Games.
Top Content: Going Down?
Both LoL and Fortnite saw a decline in viewership month-over-month, but the potential reasons for a slump from Twitch’s top two titles vary. LoL may have led Twitch in viewership, but beta testing for a new strategy-based game mode called Teamfight Tactics seems to have stolen a large portion of the game’s viewership during the second half of the month.
Meanwhile, Fortnite saw a drop in viewership as many of its top influencers saw a decline in airtime due in part to attending the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles for Fortnite-related events like this year’s celebrity pro-am.
Additionally, Fortnite’s decline month-over-month could be in part due to fewer esports-related activities that influencers were able to stream from their personal channels. Along with a break in World Cup qualifying during E3, Fortnite esports also experienced the beginning of a dead period after the final week of qualifications before this month’s culminating event.

Beta testing for Riot Games’ new auto-battler game mode Teamfight Tactics has shown immense potential as a top form of content on Twitch in a short amount of time. The strategy-based game has not only garnered attention from LoL influencers and fans alike, but it has also attracted personalities known for playing games like Auto Chess and online card games like Hearthstone .
Even though the game mode is only in beta testing, influencers who have gotten access to it have helped it generate buzz since testing started about halfway through the month. For the final two weeks of June, the game generated 29.1M hours watched on Twitch, and since June 18 when testing began, only Just Chatting and Fortnite have more hours watched than TFT.
It’s not uncommon for a new game or content produced by a high-profile developer to burst onto the scene and steal the attention of viewers for a few weeks. World of Warcraft’s Classic beta gave a boost to WoW viewership earlier this year, and EA’s take on the battle royale genre, Apex Legends , stood at the top of Twitch for a moment in time.
Whether or not TFT can consistently attract an audience on Twitch in the coming months will determine just how successful the new game could be as an established form of highly-watched content on the streaming platform.
