The match between the champions of The International 2018 and artificial intelligence took place on April 13. Representatives from OpenAI made sure that the event was covered by top analysts of Dota 2 which included: William Blitz Lee, Austin Capitalist Walsh, Owen ODPixel Davies Kevin Purge Godec and Jorien Sheever van der Heyden.
OG lost to the OpenAI Five bots team with a score of 0-2 in an exhibition match. On the second map, the International 2018 champions called “GG” in less than 20 minutes.
Looks like technology is there yet for @OpenAI.
Machines are rising and taking the first game of this Bo3 serie. Game 2 starting soon.#OpenAIFive #TeamHuman #DreamOG pic.twitter.com/ajwWcAh4S5— OG (@OGesports) April 13, 2019
Both teams picked heroes from a limited pool. Unlike previous show matches, OG was permitted to use invisibility, and the OpenAI Five courier was not invulnerable. At the same time, illusions and summoned unit were not allowed.
AI Continues to Learn
The OpenAI bot debuted at The International 2017, where it beat Danil Dendi Ishutin in a 1vs1 match on Shadow Fiend. Later, the company introduced the AI team, which didn’t stand a chance against paiN Gaming and the team of veterans of the Chinese scene. On August 5, 2018, bots of the OpenAI beat the team of casters at the TI. There were a number of restrictions in the meetings – the teams selected heroes from a limited pool and could not use illusions. The same rules applied in the game versus OG.
This #OpenAIFive Bo3 serie was a lot of fun.
Despite all our efforts and all chat messages we couldn’t beat the @OpenAI.#TeamHuman will come back stronger!#DreamOG pic.twitter.com/iOVCZRg4fv— OG (@OGesports) April 13, 2019
The results of the two games in which the OpenAI Five beat OG indicated that OpenAI Five had a better understanding of the game than in previous versions. Since they made the decision to contest OG when the TI champions were taking down the tower in order. The bots also chose to play a slow game in the first match while closing the second one in less than 20 minutes.
Beating The Pros
During the past ten months, OpenAI trained its Dota 2 models for a total of 45,000 years compared to humans. The bots competed with three professional teams, Team Lithium, SG E-Sports and Alliance, each team lost to OpenAI Five with a 2-0 score. This shows that Open AI five have come a long way since The International.
Despite the loss, OG did had a great time, as they tweeted a photo of the Dota 2 composition at the Tesla plant. The eSports athletes visited the company, which produces electric cars, before the match with the OpenAI bots.
For those interested in competing with OpenAI Five or want to play in the same team as AI, OpenAI Five has opened the website. Registration for the matches are open at OpenAI Five Arena. After OG we can expect that the other teams will be anxious to prove their mettle against the AI.
