SK Gaming Managing Director on why the org left CS:GO and their big bet on the League of Legends

by devaccess

1:56 – What was the pitch to Riot for making it into the LEC?
9:50 – Without CS:GO, what is the SK Gaming brand today?
12:05 – Trading CS:GO for LoL
21:38 – Does something need to change in CS to make it more palatable for sponsors?
24:00 – You just made a long term bet on LoL, why?

SK Gaming are no strangers to long-time European League of Legends fans, but their three-year absence from the LCS may make some newer watchers wary of the newly-minted LEC organization.

SK’s managing director, Alexander Muller, joined theScore esports Podcast to explain what the brand should mean to LoL fans, what happened to their three-time Major-winning CS:GO roster, and why sponsors are more interested in LoL than CS:GO.

Well to be fair from a historical standpoint dropping their Counter Strike Asset isn't a decision you should take lightly.
Considering that SK Gaming and Counter Strike have a history that is longer than 20 Years by now.
Especially for the German Scene its something that will have an impact. Counter Strike was the core Identity of SK Gaming dropping that Identity can have a negative impact on an organisation.

I was not very aware of the sponsor angle for CS, but still… it sounds so corporate it hurts. CS lies in the origins of SK, and dropping it because of ''oh kids" seems bad.

I was a fan of SK back in 2014/2015, and when i heard they were making a comeback i was super hyped.
Until I saw their roster, i hope they do well but it's hard to envision them doing so.

Well the players left due to the .org not helping out with paying to stay at hotels, and other stuff money related.

SK did not drop thier CS roster. Many of the players came up and said that they've had many problems with the organisation.

SK is inextricable linked to cs, the game has helped make the organization one of the first e-sport powerhouse. In CS they have a huge amount of credibility. In Lol, not so much. By the way Isn't there another team called SK already.

So they're taking a gamble by fully focusing on a non-playoff LEC team. Probs will end last place in the spring split and even so if they make playoffs one or twice leaving behind your legendary name in csgo for a team which can only make EU playoffs at best isn't a great call. If their team was good enough to compete for the LEC trophy then i say its a gamble worth taking.

SK CS:GO team left your organization , you didn't drop shit .
One time Fallen mentioned that the players had to pay for the hotels that they were staying at and not the ORG.

"We have to grow up a little bit right now" , 23:23 its super ironic that your using that statement because your saying you have to grow up to play more kid friendly games.

They are going to fail miserably. Their LoL roster is 8th place material at best, and that is not going to be enough.
