Overwatch League suspends matches following Corona Virus outbreak

by Rahul Bhatta

The Overwatch League postpones scheduled matches in Seoul for three weeks in the wake of news that Asia is spreading its virus outbreak in South Korea.

In Seoul, in March last month, the League has postponed matches for three cities in China, due to the COVID-19 disease caused by a newly-known coronavirus, infected by tens of thousands of people, mostly in China.

These matches were now postponed, together with previously scheduled Seoul dynasty dates.

“We cancel plans to host OWL 2020 matches in South Korea during Weeks 5, 6 and 7, including in the Seoul Dynasty,” the league said in a statement to protect the health and welfare of our teams, fans and personnel.

South Korea reported on Monday 161 more cases of the virus in the town of Daegu, with the country total at 763 cases and seven confirmed outbreak deaths. “We will share info as to where and when games will take place at a later date.”

It’s the first year of OWL’s world-class programme with host matches in Asia, North America and Europe for its 20 municipal franchises.

The Dynasty is the only South Korean franchise based. On the landmark Dongdaemun Design Plaza the team had planned to host matches from 7-22 March. The next tournaments of the Overwatch League will take place on 9-10 May in Seoul.
