Due to growing concerns about COVID-19, the Free Fire Champions Cup 2020 will be delayed, originally scheduling for 19 April in Jakarta, Indonesia. Garena, Free Fire developer and esports tournaments organiser, released a statement on the situation.
Garena decided to delay the event, rather than cancel it outright when Indonesia’s President announced the Coronavirus intrusion into the country. The developers have quoted a’ engagement to make our athletes, fans, partners and workers safety and wellbeing a priority,’ following a decision by Indonesia that confirmed the country on Monday, March 2 with its first COVID-19 cases. A 64-year-old boy and his 31-year-old daughter are currently being treated in a hospital in Yakarta and tested positive for coronavirus. The two patients live in Jakarta’s metropolitan area of Depok, West Java.
“If conditions allow, we are exploring every way of proceeding with the Event,” says Garena. The finals for the Free Fire India Championship will begin in the meanwhile, but without an audience, they are turned into a closed-door affair.
In the next few months Jakarta continues to be the venue for many esports events. ESL’s Arena of Valor Clash of Nations is scheduled for 29 to 31 March, whereas the ONE Dot 2 World Invitation to Sports is scheduled for 18 to 19 April. These organisers still have a statement on their events to write.
