MET Events’ Malaysian division has split off from its parent company, Mineski Global, and rebranded into an independent corporate entity: IO Esports. The new company will unveil a new expansion roadmap soon, and aims to host esports events throughout Southeast Asia and globally.
IO Esports CEO Kenchi Yap said the decision to split off from Mineski was due to “our differences in strategic planning and the direction of the company.”
“I would like to thank Mineski for their collaborative efforts for the past 10 years, working together in flourishing the global esports industry. Nonetheless, we have parted ways with Mineski on good terms and will continue to focus on our new direction”, he said, in a statement.
Mineski Global runs a number of companies across Southeast Asia. Aside from MET Events, this includes the Mineski professional gaming team, news portal Mineski.net, and a franchise of cybercafes called Mineski Infinity. IO Esports will continue running the Malaysian locations of Mineski Infinity as part of a separate franchise agreement.
IO Esports and MET recently concluded the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang M1 World Championships in Axiata Arena Kuala Lumpur. The company reported an attendance of 4,000, with 650K watching on YouTube. Other events run by MET include the Manila Masters and ESL One Manila Dota 2 tournaments.
