Is Streaming the Future of Smash?

by devaccess

For years, there’s only been one way to make a living playing Smash Bros. the tournament grind.

It was exhausting. The prize pools were garbage. And there were a dozen other players fighting you for those scraps.

But what if your financial future wasn’t dependent on where you lived, how you performed on game day or a joke of a prize pool?

What if the best players in the world could actually control their own destiny?

I don't feel sorry for any of these guys. Nintendo has said at the beginning that they don't think tournaments are viable for them. Holding Smash tournaments does not make Nintendo more money. If these people see that there's no money in there, then they are doing it for the notoriety.

Because smash isn't a competitve game. The meta stays the same until a new game comes out, and the rng of items makes the game boring. Melee and brawl have ugly graphics and are a pain to watch. The game itself has no real competitve mode that rainbow or cs has. The game to me isn't fun to watch, but it's a blast to play with friends. I dont think smash will ever have the biggest esports league.

Good video, but I think it's important to mention this isn't exactly exclusive to Smash. Streamers like Imaqtpie and IWillDominate both exited the LCS because they were getting paid alright for being pro players, but made way more streaming and didn't have to deal with the pressure and stress of competing as a pro player.

You know if Nintendo made like an annual competitive tournament with larger prize pools for a bunch of their games like smash, splatoon 2 and Pokémon with PROPER rules that would be great

It's less meritocratic since everyone has limited finances to dedicate to a game they might not be consistent at.

I'm just a little annoyed by how they don't mention that a lot of top players are part of major organizations that do cover their living costs and give them a salary to go to tournaments.

It pisses me off that Nintendo, a company with billions of dollars, can’t find the little time and money it takes to support smash tournaments

is that not a problem with the teams and owners and sponsors then??? why is that not a discussion??? why are there top-tier esports teams with players that dont enter tournaments because they just dont make enough money from it??????????????

Zero has like 10k+ subs I believe, hes makin like 30-50k a month. Why the fuck would he compete? If nintendo actually cared, and put up some real money, then maybe it would be different.

I had the same reaction when Dafran stepped down. Dafran makes the same if not more money for less effort streaming. Sounds like a simple choice to me x

The problem is that streaming makes to much money for doing jack shit. That's why I hate streamers. You shouldn't make so much money for just playing a video game for like 4-5 hours
