Is Overwatch League Dying?

by devaccess

So right now, the Overwatch League is getting a lot of negative attention.

A bunch of big name talent just left, some viewership numbers are allegedly inflated and the travel schedule is intense.

But here’s the thing — all of the issues people are talking about, have either existed for a while now, or, have been a long time coming.

Let us break it down for you.

So what do you guys think? Is OWL in trouble? Is this all overblown? Or is it somewhere in between?

They shouldn't have ignored their players for a league. Now they're doing the same thing for a stupid pve cash grab that's just there to please the people who quit after 3 months. Im just waiting for project a at this point.

Owl is riddled with problems bur i will also say Monte and Doa suck duck at casting owl so why would you want them back? They constantly have conversations during gameplay, too slow to cast, tell shit jokes.. etc

Good riddance to all

I've been playing OW since it was released. It's a fun game. But with OWL, I used to watch it til season 2. That Goats thing was getting boring

This global travel thing has got to be one of the stupidest ideas I have ever seen from a big company in any domain, let alone esports.

OWL was dead as soon as Activison Blizzard ripped off Fortune 500 investors for hundreds of millions. It has to be the most insane investment ever, did these guys actually think there’d be a return on investment?

blizzard has no idea how to create nor maintain the idea of an fps game.
of course, this entire time they have been making mobas and rpg games. but overwatch is their first fps game, and then again, overwatch isn't even fully a fps game. it's half fps, half moba.
that being said, this is absolutely no excuse.
their biggest problem is that they can't figure out whether or not they want to appeal more to casuals or competitive players.
they're afraid of losing both sides which is why they can't fucking do anything.

I think all games are in trouble until they focus on the amateur ranked league they have in the game. people will continue to be discouraged about any future in a game when the player base itself remains toxic. there are players out there that thrive on teamwork more then standing out in solo plays. no game out there will have a sustained full model like any sport because the dont moderate the ranked system the devs implement, and since they refuse not to out source amateur ranked play. this leaves the big number of the player based discouraged and beat down.

Monte has pretty damn good foresight. If he's jumping ship, it's because the ship is going to hit an iceberg no one else can see yet.

I've hoped it'll die from the first day it has launched. We were promised a game with constant new content which was true for the first year. Then all the money went into OWL and we got recycled events. And don't even get me started on OWL and regular overwatch having a diffrent teams developing. Near the start there was supposed to be a 100 page comic, then they changed their concept. Then it dissapeared. Then any real lore development dissapeared, they focused hardly on just PrO PlaYz. I don't care about watching other ppl play the game, I want to play the game, stop showing korean kids playing this in my face. I'm fine in my diamond/masters, it's just lack of content that drove me away from the game and some sweaty tryhards telling me about the meta(when I play with my friends who are lower ranks than me) when obviously they lack a pure mechanical skill. Funny thing is the lower ranks you play(down to plats/gold) the more often you'll hear about metas and see people trying to play like "pros" when they obviously can't play on that level

As soon as the OWL was rush out the door with no organic growth. People a year ago were called haters for predicting that its gonna go the same failed path as Starcraft 2 did.

Honestly I think its because of Overwatch 2. If they focused on the live service aspect and brought us incredible seasons, changes, updates, etc. there would be a huge audience. COME ON BLIZZARD DONT LET OW DIE I LOVED IT

Take it from someone who's played overwatch since Launch. I'm talking thousands of hours.. it's dying from terrible balance. They prop OW as an esport but are so bad at balance and so slow to make changes that all the fans and players are moving on to other games.

Reply
Sean Bryant January 17, 2020 - 10:54 am

Imagine if they didn't just pump money into the league and orgs and actually balanced the game, and had regular fun updates.

Reply
metalfaust19 January 17, 2020 - 10:54 am

Only Blizzard was dumb enough to throw so much money and manpower at something as fickle as gaming esports. Games die. People get bored.

OWL will be looked at poorly by history. In 10 years it will be taught as how not to make an esport and people will accept and understand a game has to grow and be loved by fans organically.

OWL is the most unfun soulless corporate bullshit ever

I'm still in love with OW because it has alot of potential to be entertaining. From high OWL gameplay to local competition( which alot of people want but cant because of blizzard banning 3rd party competition). Sadly blizzard refuses to acknowledge community and even faces of ow(streamer, talent, etc). Even within its realm like contender and path to pro its being neglected. I'm slowly starting to lose interest in the game. I just hope it picks up this year. (sidnote: I've been around since season 3 competitive ladder. I've seen most of the changes of ow) come on blizzard.

I rather watch overwatch contenders tbh. That team colour and effect is not pleasing to the eye and hard to tell wat is going on.

Reply
Maamimi January 17, 2020 - 10:54 am

OW's biggest issue imo is that it drew a crowd of people looking for some specific things (character lore, fun events, stuff external to the esports side of it) then drip-fed that kind of content slowly after the first year which killed a large portion of the player base. I could imagine OWL being 2-3 times bigger than its initial launch and maintaining more numbers due to that had it come out at a time when the player base was larger and more in love with the game and thus more receptive to the possibility of OW esports

The inflated numbers allegation isn’t that big of a deal cause I’m pretty sure ALOT of people, organizations, tv shows, etc have done similar things

Reply
Kyle Jones January 17, 2020 - 10:54 am

It's dead. Overwatch is a bad esport game. It was a forced esport by pumping money into it instead of growing naturally. It was dead on arrival.

OW cost them 4 years to make about 1~2 years content,
and they use only 1 year to fuck OW league up.
BZ used to be good at making games ,
but now they are good at fuck up games .
