NSE was founded in 2017 as the United Kingdom’s first official university esports body. It was created by Benchmark, a global group of organizations that specialize in the development of sport and entertainment-related networks, and is supported by British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS), the national governing body for university sport in the UK.

Other NSE partners include Monster Energy Database-Link-e1521645463907, gamer-focused charity Special Effect, and Belong Gaming Arenas Database-Link-e1521645463907.

The inaugural season of the British Esports Championship kicked off in October of 2018, during which nearly 600 unique teams across 79 universities competed for the title of “Esports University of the Year.”

Teams compete in seven different game titles including Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Database-Link-e1521645463907 (CS:GO), Dota 2 Database-Link-e1521645463907, Overwatch Database-Link-e1521645463907, and League of Legends Database-Link-e1521645463907.
