As everybody knows, one of the biggest doubts in the quarterback position is happening in San Francisco this season. The 49ers have two QBs coming back from injuries and so far there is no official decision on who is going to be the starter on Week 1. Let’s see how is the QB battle in San Francisco.
Brock Purdy
First let’s talk about Brock Purdy, who is probably going to be the starter. The Mr. Irrelevant from the 2022 NFL Draft had a fairy-tale first season in the league. He rose from QB3 to lead the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game undefeated. However, with a poor performance due to a serious elbow injury, he couldn’t make it to the Super Bowl.
The consequences of this injury lasted. He tore his elbow ligaments and needed to undergo surgery. After some delays in his recovery process, he was ready for training camp. And once there, Purdy has been getting starter reps on practice, which is an unofficial indicator that he will be the starter on Week 1.
Speaking of the most recent updates, Purdy didn’t do very well in last Tuesday’s practice. The stats were not bad, the performance was. According to the reports, he threw 11 passes on the 11-on-11 drill, completing eight of them, including two for touchdown. However, he also threw two near picks and seemed uncomfortable in the pocket, being sacked twice.
Trey Lance
The 49ers had great expectations when they drafted Trey Lance in 2021. He was a No. 3 overall pick but never had a great season. In his rookie year, he was Jimmy Garoppolo’s backup. In Year 2, he was named the starter but had a season-ending injury in Week 2 and is coming back to practice now.
According to reports, he has also been struggling on the training camp, missing a few easy passes. On Tuesday, he completed 4 of 6 passes. He also was sacked once. He didn’t flirt with interception though.
