Grow Up: Booing is Good for the Overwatch League, and Esports

by devaccess

Is it OK to boo at an esports event?

Last weekend, for the first time ever, home field advantage was real in the Overwatch League. Fans cheered, clapped, and booed for the teams they love and love to hate.

And despite what you’ve heard, that isn’t disrespectful. In fact, it’s a great sign for the OWL, says theScore esports’ Colin McNeil.

Booing is extremely childish. It's also a slippery slope towards toxic crowds, which can eventually include toxic parents who attack referees and other parents, which isn't an impossibility since esports are growing and aiming to get to that level of saturation. My varsity hockey team had a parent and a coach like that. Brought the entire team morale down on the regular. Being a competitor is a massively psychological experience so I don't think a childish crowd brings anything of value to the table for the athletes. Seriously, if I want to win, I can't give a shit about what other people think. I'm not doing it to please them; I'm doing it to improve, grow, and hopefully win.
Anyway, I can't think of a less productive way of enjoying a game than to act completely childish in a crowd. What do you expect to learn by emulating neurosis for 2-3 hours? Fuck that. Liking a team is one thing but booing is completely classless. This is a cynical effort to make esports more marketable to dullards

i just dont want this to turn into gangs that fight after a game, like what happens in traditional sports like football. just look up football hooligans
i mean yeah, booing a player/team for bad behaviour or trash talking is completely ok, but booing a team walking on/off the field is just bad sportsmanship.
i watch a sport for the gameplay and i'll applaud any great play regardless of which team made it.

If someone boos a team, it means that they are trying to discourage the other team in a way to tell them, "hey I want the other team to win, you guys suck and they are pro!", which is the same psychological warfare as cheering, "hey I want you guys to win, beat the shit out of the other team, you guys are pro and they suck!"

Cheering sounds positive, but it can be quite negative as well :3
So if booing is bad and needs to go, cheering should too. Just make everything like a live action movie, a bit of whispering and silent clapping, and some "gasp" sounds here and there.

While I can see that some people dont like boo'ing because its seen as a negative act that can put strain on professionals, You do need Boo'ing and that negativity. Truthfully? When you become famous in any way shape or form? You need to have thick skin. And if a Crowd is boo'ing you? Suck it up, play your heart out and win.

I mean, just look at professional wrestler. or Hell, the Fighting Game Community.
Heels and Villains LOVE the Negative attention. Because human beings love to focus more on the negative than the positive~

I agree booing is healthy for any type of sport, but you shouldn't do that to an opposing team right when they're entering the stadium. Even in football you don't boo an opposing team before the game even starts. If you want to boo them after a play that's totally different, at least have respect for the players being there.

Now I wish the Overwatch League itself will be more open to its players taunting/ roasting the enemy team without being seen as toxic.

Or for teams to be able to brag with confidence without it being criticised by the OWL for unsportsmanlike behavior

Can’t stand when the crowd boos during MMA events. You got 2 fighters bleeding for our entertainment and all the crowd can do is boo when the fighters are tired from trying to take each other’s heads off. Luckily booing during mma events doesn’t happen in every culture. Russians and Japanese crowds typically don’t boo even when their fighter loses or the fight slows down.
