Late Monday afternoon, the Essendon Bombers announced that it was selling their “esports license” to the ISP Pentanet of Western Australia, which has ended the video games alliance in the last couple of years.
The AFL club confirmed that Pendant. GG, the Balcatta based ISP’s sporting arm, would own the licence and the Bombers ‘ place was “effective immediately” in the Oceanic Pro League.
“After two years participating in esports, the transition and selling of the Bombers’ OPL licence to Pentanet have significantly allowed the club to recognise an improvement in the market value of the asset,” the Bombers said.
The esports initiative, which allowed the AFL club to expand its revenue base through the use of “a number of non-endemic product alliances” said Xaviers Campbell, chief executive officer of the Essendon Bombers. The Bombers decided and “reprioritise to concentrate on other key strategic goals”
“As a club, we will continue to challenge the situation and examine emerging trends and developments in non-traditional regions with the overriding goal of promoting our core business–soccer,” says Crows of Adelaide. “Through its participation the club is the only surviving Football Club in any Code to have a significant interest in esports
