Clients will merge in Overwatch and Overwatch 2

by Gabriel Hall

Overwatch and Overwatch 2 users will combine at some point in the future.

The developement team wants to split the player base, which is normally done when the servers are shut down, according to Overwatch Game Director Jeff Kaplan.

“There will be a point where the clients merge,” the Lead Game Director said. “We think this is important, especially as a competitive experience. The whole idea is to avoid fragmenting the player base and giving anybody a competitive advantage.

“You better have no better framerate than if you’re in a different version of the engine when we play at the same competitive pool,” said Kaplan during BlizzCon. “This is part of the team’s motto that a player is not left behind. The team ensures it continues by making multiplayer maps, heroes and modes in Overwatch 2, accessible for players to update simultaneously in the original game.

Kaplan immediately confirmed in the interview that Overwatch will receive significant changes to the game before Overwatch 2 is launched. This means that the team doesn’t focus completely on the live game.

Overwatch 2 release date is currently without a release date, there’s a lot of rumors about the release date.
