Blizzard's Hong Kong Apology is Only Making Things Worse

by devaccess

So, last week, Blizzard messed up pretty bad. They banned a Hearthstone player, took away his prize money and fired some casters, all because the player chose to speak his mind about the political climate in Hong Kong.

You’d think that by now, they would have fixed their mistake and tried to make things right with everyone who’s mad at them.

And you’d be wrong.

Over the weekend, Blizzard issued a pretty weak statement that only served to get everyone even more pissed at them. And trust me, people are pissed.

I can suggest to the gamers around the world. Try type fight for freedom, stand with Hong Kong in any games that you play. Then find out if you are ban in their chat room. If so, those games are communist games and should be boycotted.

Seriously, all Blizzard had to do, was treat Blitzchung's bit as…well…a bit. In the grand scheme of things it'll affect nothing. You won't see millions more march in the streets because of it. The Chinese Communist Party isn't going to crumble because of it. It's just a bit. Someone using their 5 mins with the mic to say something. The Globe continues spinning. The end.

This is why Blizzard is getting all this backlash. Not just the nature of the reaction, but the speed of said reaction, the severity of said reaction, and the 800 pound gorilla question of "was all this really necessary?" This is also why Blizzard's subsequent lowering of penalties and statement ring hollow. No one sincerely believes that Blizzard's relationship with China had nothing to do with China. And at this point, even if there wasn't, the optics don't really allow for that interpretation.

In short, Blizzard screwed up. Bad.

While I am in support for the protest in Hong Kong and think it was shitty what blizzard did, I am shocked this channel and mainly this host is not okay with what blizzard did even though it was in their policy but the 'okay' symbol was NOT ok and an obvious 4chan bait.

I don’t agree with what blizzard has done don’t get me wrong but this statement takes it out of context. The pride comparison to the Hong Kong comparison is like oranges and apples. I totally understand keeping it about the game. When did you see Lebron James after a basketball game go off and say something political like BLM. Never that’s right he talks about the game and makes his political points on the side out side of his work so to speak. I think the player should still be banned keep his hard earned money but blizzard still messed this up. I still lost a ton of respect for blizzard.

I'm fully against blizzard but some misinformation, the post that is claimed to be made by blizzard was actually a hearthstone account that is entirely controlled by net ease, although it does still use blizzard so they are at some fault it was not made by blizzard

I would love to see a boycott but that would never happen
The people over at Blizzard make games that people want to play, they have good games that people won't stop playing because of this drama.
This situation will be irrelevant in a few weeks/months

Gamers will burn companies to the ground for a twitter post.

But refuse to take a stand when they rob them blind and repay for the same game every single year ?‍♂️

The comments pointing at Riot's new fps games and card games are cynical
since at the end of the game Riot is own by Tencent wich is the company making American Developers bend the knee to China. So if you play Overwatch, Fornite, LOL, Call of Duty, ETC. You are giving them your money.
