Astralis Officially Announce Their Roster for the LEC 2023 Winter Split

by Rohat Dicle Kılınç

The official five-man LEC roster for Astralis has been revealed.

As we get closer and closer to the newly renamed League of Legends EMEA Championship, more teams are making official roster announcements. Astralis is the second team to announce their LEC roster, but unlike MAD Lions they did it with a video skit. In the video posted from the organization’s Twitter page, the young mid laner Oliver “Dajor” Ryppa, who was on the team last year, is shown assembling a new roster featuring:

  • Finn “Finn” Wiestål
  • Doğukan “113” Balcı
  • Oliver “Dajor” Ryppa
  • Kasper “Kobbe” Kobberup
  • Lee “JeongHoon” Jeong-hoon

While the video itself is humorous and is praised in the community, it also shows that Astralis is willing to place their mid laner as the face of the organization. The 2022 LEC Season was the German player’s first year on Europe’s biggest stage and his performance kept getting better as the year went on. After a disastrous Spring where Astralis placed tenth, Dajor put on a good showing in Summer, with the rest of his team, but they faltered during the later weeks of the split and ended the regular season in ninth place.

As for the rest of the roster, Astralis decided to stick with the same bot lane from last year. The veteran ADC Kobbe had a decent Summer, despite his slump in Spring. But arguably the biggest news for the organization in the bot lane is them keeping the rookie support JeongHoon. The Korean support player joined Astralis at the start of Summer Split, from Fredit BRION Challengers, without too many expectations. Still, he impressed both the fans and analysts with his flashy plays and individual prowess, winning the Rookie of the Year award for the 2022 LEC Summer Split.

The two new transfers for the team come from the top side of the Rift. Unlike last year when Astralis went with two veteran players like Kiss “Vizicsacsi” Tamás and Andrei “Xerxe” Dragomir, the organization decided to bet on younger talent. While the top laner Finn has been a mainstay in both LEC and LCS since 2020, he is still a newer player that showed he has a big upside. They also brought in the Turkish jungler 113 from the dominant LFL side Karmine Corp. 113 won the European Masters 2022 Spring Main Event with KC, but he wasn’t the player who shone in his team. Also, not many fans regarded him as a top jungler even in the French ERL, but it looks like Astralis has hope that their rookie jungler can learn and grow a lot in the LEC.
