Allied Esports and TV Azteca have announced a deal with esports tournament operator PGL and game developer The Coalition to broadcast the Latin American region of the upcoming Gears 5 Pro League.
Azteca Esports will produce weekly broadcasts for the region, which includes four teams, beginning on Oct. 28. A live finale will take place on Nov. 25 at TV Azteca Studios in Mexico City.
“Mexico’s incredible passion for the Gears franchise has resulted in fans expressing their love of Gears through everything from Gears ink tattoos to themed weddings,” said The Coalition’s Gears Esports Creative Program Manager, Rose Gunson, in a release. “This enthusiasm extends to the games themselves, as the player base in Mexico produces some of the highest activity for Gears titles and features more players playing Gears of War 4 at the highest professional skill levels than anywhere else. For this season of Gears Esports, we felt it was important to partner with the team at Azteca Esports to reach this passionate community in an authentic way.”
TV Azteca invested $5M in Allied Esports back in June, formalizing a strategic alliance that includes plans to create Mexico’s first 24-hour digital esports and video game channel. The companies first collaborated on a NATION VS NATION tournament for PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS in May.
The Gears 5 2019-20 season will feature more than $2M in total prizing, with a World Championship planned for July 2020. The season structure will include a Pro League for North America, Latin America, and Europe, as well as three major Open events. The first Open will take place on Dec. 6-8 in San Diego, with the second in Mexico City in March 2020.
