Right as EVO started, the Smash community was handed one of the single craziest controversies we’ve ever seen in esports. Two top players were involved in a match-fixing scandal that has fundamentally altered the top player rankings in Smash Ultimate.
So, in case you missed it, Smash Ultimate player Zack Lauth, better known to the Smash community as CaptainZack admitted to asking fellow top Smasher Elliot Bastien Carroza-Oyarce, better known as Ally, to throw two major tournament matches.

I'm glad that a video like this has finally handled the matter in an informative fact-based, and sensitive matter, without seeking to sensationalize what was a very unfortunate series of events for both players. I wish both Ally and CaptainZack continued growth and success, as well as recovery from the mistakes that they've made. Thanks for giving us a lot of good games during your career!

Ally/Captain Zack dating is a controversy that no one really cares about. Unless you know them personally, it's all just keyboard warrior outrage.
The whole thing of banning Ally for dating Zack is nothing more than reacting to the problem of pedos within the Smash community. The whole age of consent thing is complicated, but it's hardly the place for a bunch of TOs to have a say in.
As for the match fixing, they should both get a multi-year ban. Fuck that mess.

I hadn't seen his comment saying how he understood the reasons for his banning, and it kind of surprised me to see him take it so well.
I was watching the EVO 2019 live stream and Captain Zack was spamming the chat with his alternate Twitch account, MMO_Main. He kept spamming this message that was calling out another smash player who hadn't been banned for doing something that was blatantly racist (I can't remember exactly who it was. The only recent racism controversy I've heard of was the one involving Bocchi and Stroder…) and that Ally was banned for something that was consensual. The spam comments all began in "lol" and ended in "lmaoooooo," as if to show the situation was ironic or something.
I dunno how this all ties together. The whole situation really is quite confusing.
