Beta testing for the new auto-battler game mode called Teamfight Tactics in League of Legends generated massive amounts of attention from LoL players and traditional strategy-based gamers alike when it began in June.
Since then, the game has continually produced strong viewership, and as a result, regular LoL has seen diminishing viewership. Though TFT is still in the beta testing phase, if it manages to consistently produce strong viewership like this, it could carve out a new niche for the faction of gamers interested in strategy-based titles. Such viewership has slid on Twitch as online card game Hearthstone has seen declines in year-over-year viewership.
Time to Talk
The Just Chatting category outperformed every game on Twitch, making it the most-watched for the first time since it was created last year as a part of the fragmentation of the “IRL” category.
Félix “xQc” Lengyel led the way for Just Chatting this past week with 72 hours of airtime and 1M hours watched averaging 14K concurrent viewers. While the category didn’t have notably strong viewership compared to most weeks, declining viewership for both LoL and Fortnite helped it rise to the top.

Even though no game managed to crack 20M hours watched last week, or over even 18M for that matter, top forms of content on Twitch as a whole saw notable strength across the board.
It’s not uncommon for one or two games to produce a couple of good weeks of viewership that make it so that five different games rack up 10M hours watched in a week. However, this past week, a combination of TFT’s rise and the EPICENTER Major in Dota 2 led to six different titles getting more than 12M hours watched for the week.
The last time six categories on Twitch had more than 12M hours watched in a week was March 18-24. That week Dota 2 had 12M hours watched thanks in part to the DreamLeague Season 11 Major. Meanwhile, the release of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice accrued 13.1M hours watched.
