League of Legends – The rise of Sona/Taric combo – esportsjunkie

by Shehryar Raza

In League of Legends (LoL) , champions are chosen according to the lane and role they will play in the game. However, in some cases, professional players of LoL decide to dare and change champions from their original roles. This is the case of the Sona and Taric duo. Both support champions, have witnessed incredible success in the bot lane. The use of the two was drafted by the TSM Academy during the LCS Academy playoffs. After that, DetonatioN FocusMe made it successful pick at MSI 2019 when they competed against MEGA. Let’s have a look at the dynamics of the champions and why this strategy is not recommended in ranked games.

Source

TSM Academy was responsible for making this pair popular. The players Erik “Treatz” Wessén and Edward “Tactical” Ra, decided to take the risk during the playoffs of the LCS Academy and picked the Sona and Taric combo for the bot lane. The duo appeared in the match against the team of Echo Fox, who were completely outplayed. The tactic adopted by the TSM caught the attention of other pro players and spectators as it was very interesting to see two supports in a single lane. Since the bot lane is originally composed of a shooter and support.

Strategy

Although the duo is not quite impressive in the laning phase, it becomes a force to be reckoned with as the game progresses. The strategy of choice is based on the high healing power of the champions, as well as their shields and stunning capabilities. To compensate for the low physical damage in the lane, Sona uses more AP (Ability Power) in her build, which justifies the choice of the Lich Bane item on the champion.

How to beat the duo

Even though Sona and Taric combo is powerful, it is not invincible. There are alternatives to defeating Sona and Taric on the lane, such as choosing an aggressive champion, or constantly harassing them both before they get their ultimates. LeBlanc is an example of an offensive choice since it is able to eliminate opponents quickly. It is important to defeat them at the beginning of the game, as both are quite hard to deal with in the later stages.

Use in ranks

The duo is pretty powerful but we still won’t recommend you to pick it for the Solo / Duo queues. For the duo to work, it is important that the team has incredible chemistry. Since playing these champions in the lane requires excellent communication between the players of the whole team. In the case of the TSM Academy, for example, the team already had a strategy to survive the early laning phase, with considerable AD damage. The NA team opted for Jayce at the top and Irelia in the middle to help compensate for low raw damage on the bot lane and win the match.
