Professional Fortnite player LootBoy Voidd made headlines today for all the wrong reasons.
A two-time Fortnite Champion Series (FNCS) Finalist—Voidd competes at the game’s highest level. To maintain such a status requires players to invest thousands of hours. For some, competitive Fortnite is a full-time job, meaning many of the world’s best talents find their methods of earning their primary school education.
On that note, Voidd and his mother — known only as mamavoidd — went at one another on Twitter. It didn’t take long for the story to go viral, and some people managed to capture the encounter before Voidd and his mother erased the tweets.

Esports personality Jake Lucky got ahold of the Twitter exchange between mother and son before both deleted their tweets. The initial message from Voidd reads:
“If u have supportive parents don’t take it for granted ahaha so sh*t having a demotivating and unsupportive dad.”
The professional Fortnite player did not provide context behind the tweet. However, his mother defended the father’s actions in a Twitter response only 15 minutes later.
“Calling your parents f****** c**** is not acceptable because they say you can’t stay up until 3am on a school night- that’s not being unsupported that’s called being a parent,” she said. “And now I’m blocked.”

The always-opinionated Jonathan “yungcalc” Weber approached the drama differently. He responded to the now-deleted tweets, saying:
“School isn’t going to make your son a millionaire, stop being a close minded person and let him follow his dreams, your son has already made it pretty far, what if you and his father are whats stopping him from reaching the top? Moral of the story, let your son follow his dreams.”
Despite a swift backlash from many commenters, Calc stuck to his belief that the child-parent relationship is a two-way street.
The Strive for Greatness and the Toll it Takes

It was a bizarre exchange between Voidd and his mother—undoubtedly a sign of the times. It’s become viable for young gamers to make careers out of competitive Fortnite. Some competitors, such as Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf and Kyle “Mongraal” Jackson, have earned hundreds of thousands to over a million dollars from their organizational contracts and tournament winnings.
Voidd is merely one of the millions looking to accomplish the same. However, as we mentioned earlier, success in Fortnite comes with time; late nights, early mornings, staggered school schedules and hours upon hours of practice. Only a tiny percentage of players achieve such an outcome in their careers.

While the exchange has become a meme in record time, there are multiple learnable lessons in play. The incident is a cautionary tale to handle personal matters off the internet. Despite Voidd and his mother deleting the tweets, they’ll live on forever because of screen captures.
Voidd continued his rampage on Twitter, telling former teammate Jaden “Wolfiez” Ashman that he has a “massive ego.” We can safely assume that this story will gain more traction, but it’s not the kind of exposure a young Fortnite talent might be seeking. Many personalities beyond Fortnite responded to Jake Lucky’s tweet, including some from the Call of Duty scene. It’s taken on a life of its own at this point.
