Update: Skillshot Media confirmed that proceeds from the revenue sharing program will be split 50-50 between teams and prize pools.

Hi-Rez Studios has introduced a revenue sharing program for its Paladins Premier League (PPL) teams streaming on Mixer.

Beginning April 26, viewers can purchase a virtual currency called Mixer Embers and redeem them during livestreams to activate animated stickers and promoted chat messages.

A portion of the proceeds will be given to the PPL teams as well as prize pools for the Mid-Season Invitational and the Paladins World Championship.

Mixer. Beginning April 26, viewers can provide monetary support to their favorite Paladins Premier League (PPL) teams by purchasing Mixer Embers.

Mixer Embers is a virtual currency sold in a number of bundles ranging from $0.99 USD to $49.99. These Embers can be redeemed for premium “Skills” that add to the viewing experience with animated stickers, full-screen effects, and prominently displayed chat messages. Unlike Sparks, the Mixer virtual currency that can be earned, Embers were introduced in January as a purchase-only monetization tool for streamers.

According to a spokesperson for Skillshot Media, the operator of the PPL, 50% proceeds from Mixer Embers spent during Paladins Premier League broadcasts will go back to the teams. Organizations participating in the 2019 Paladins Premier League include Natus Vincere

The other 50% of the proceeds will contribute to the prize pool for PPL’s two major LAN events in 2019—the Mid-Season Invitational and the Paladins World Championship.

A similar program was introduced to Hi-Rez Stuidos’ other professional esports league, the SMITE Pro League, in March at the start of its season.

Mixer Embers and the Skills you purchase with them are Microsoft’s answer to Twitch’s virtual currency, Bits, and the ability to buy “Cheers.” Introduced in 2016, Cheering on Twitch offers similar incentives—animated stickers and chat messages—to live broadcasts while providing monetary support to players. Purchasing Cheers during special esports events such as the Overwatch League will unlock branded items and in-game loot.

Blizzard Entertainment

introduced the HGC Cheer program to the Heroes Global Championship, Blizzard’s Heroes of the Storm professional league, in 2017 and again in the first second half of 2018 before the league was canceled in December.
