Game developer Ubisoft has announced the upcoming release of Rainbow Six Mobile.
According to the developer, the mobile game was in development for the last three years, with live tests expected to be scheduled ‘in the following weeks’.

The game will be a tactical mobile shooter featuring two teams of five players. Ubisoft also announced that the game was built from the ground up for mobile devices, but bears a strong resemblance to Rainbow Six: Siege, Ubisoft’s FPS released in 2015.
Ubisoft announced details in a blog post: ” Our vision is to bring the Rainbow Six universe to mobile, enabling more people worldwide to enjoy this competitive, tactical, and immersive FPS experience whenever and wherever they want. We feel very lucky that the mobile market has evolved to the point where we can develop such an ambitious game that we love to play.”
The developer noted that the original development team will still continue to work on Rainbow Six: Siege and that both titles will have separate resources going forward. This means that Siege will not be affected by the upcoming mobile game.

It’s interesting that Ubisoft mentioned that the ‘mobile market has evolved’ to a point where the company can release a standalone mobile FPS. This seems to be an opinion shared by other companies with Apex Legends, VALORANT, and Rocket League all having, or developing, standalone mobile versions.
Esports Insider says: The new mobile version can definitely be a hit since a number of mobile shooters have proven successful, such as Call of Duty Mobile and PUBG MOBILE. Rainbow Six is a more complex game by design, and it’ll be interesting to see how can Ubisoft balance the tactical approach of the original game with the approachability of a mobile title. Despite not mentioning an esports scene, the development of potential new esports ecosystems should also bolster the competitive mobile gaming sector.
