Twitch announced Thursday via social media that TwitchCon San Diego has been canceled due to COVID-19. The event, which promotes and celebrates content creators from its streaming platform, canceled the event due to guidelines put in place by California Gov. Gavin Newsom prohibiting gatherings of 250 or more people. The guidelines require gatherings of this size or greater be canceled or postponed to avoid the spread of COVID-19.

Last March, TwitchCon canceled its Amsterdam event that was scheduled for May 2-3 because of the same health concerns surrounding COVID-19.
Twitch noted that there is a possibility that the Amazon-owned company is looking at other ways in which to create an alternate event that would undoubtedly be done online. While no specific details were given, the announcement states more information will be forthcoming.
Last year’s TwitchCon event held in San Diego saw more than 28,000 people participate in the biannual video game streaming cultural convention.
