Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 1 has already provided players an experience unlike ever before. The new map, weapons and mechanics provided enough content and replay value to keep the game fresh. Early trailers and teasers indicated Epic had much more planned than initially expected.
Today, players get to learn the ins and outs of some new additions to the game. Hotfix v19.01 is officially here, and Epic finally unveiled the long-awaited tornado and lightning weather elements fans have been waiting to see.

New weather elements will undoubtedly alter the way players usually perceive dangerous Tornadoes and Lightning. In Fortnite, these two effects assist you immensely in your Battle Royale journey. First off, Tornadoes act as a method of transportation. You’ll want to run toward one if you see it because it spins you around until you deploy a Glider or it spits you out.
The best part is that you won’t take fall damage. Dark clouds forming overhead also is not something you should fear. While the Lightning from it deals slight damage, the effects make you move faster. If you’re desperate for a speed boost, head to the nearest body of water or the highest point beneath a dark cloud. Both methods will result in a Lightning strike.
From now until January 17, Epic Games declared Tornado Week, which will often occur in-game. This event should provide the best chance to test the new mechanic.
Flare Gun Returns
Hotfix v19.01 has brought the Flare Gun back into Fortnite. In Chapter 2 Season 3, the Flare Gun allowed players to engulf wooded areas and structures in flames. The weapon also acted as a tool to reveal player locations in the immediate vicinity. You can find Flare Guns in Chests, on the ground and in Supply Drops.
Here are two competitive-focused notes provided by Epic:
- Tornadoes and lightning are not included in competitive playlists.
- Flare Guns are currently not in competitive playlists but are subject to an evaluation period.
During this Season, items like the Flare Gun and Shield Keg could potentially be introduced to competitive playlists after a one-to-two week evaluation period. In this Season in particular, we’re evaluating the viability of more mid-Season items introduced to competitive playlists than in recent previous Seasons.
