Team Liquid announced today that its Dota 2 team, which won The International 7 de facto world championship in 2017, has left to start a new organization of its own.
The team, led by Kuro “KuroKy” Takhasomi has not yet announced any details about its new organization. Team Liquid finished second at last month’s The International 2019, and finished fourth at last year’s tournament. All told, the organization has earned nearly $22.5M in prize money to date from Dota 2, according to Esports Earnings.
“After four years under the Team Liquid organization, our Dota team has decided to pursue this new dream: To build a team of their own,” wrote Team Liquid founder and co-CEO, Victor “Nazgul” Goossens. “While it fills me with great sadness to part ways with the best Dota roster we ever could have dreamed of, I am proud of the unforgettable years we have spent together, which include innumerable championships, records, and memories.”
Despite the departure of its successful roster, Team Liquid plans to stay in Dota 2 and recruit a new squad. A Team Liquid spokesperson confirmed to The Esports Observer that its partnership with enterprise software company SAP—which provides the organization with custom Dota 2 insights and analytics—is unchanged by today’s roster moves.
