On Friday, Team Liquid’s Super Smash Bros. Melee pro Juan “Hungrybox” DeBiedma announced on Twitter that he and his mother would appear in a new commercial for Campbell’s Chunky Soup to air on Twitch.
DeBiedma has been the top-ranked Melee player since 2017 and is regarded as one of the “Five Gods of Melee” – a group of players that have won the majority of Melee tournaments in the modern era. Earlier this year, DeBiedma was also featured in a short commercial as part of Team Liquid’s partnership with Honda.
In February, Team Liquid signed a deal that made Twitch its exclusive sponsorship sales partner. The team has also signed deals with Jersey Mike’s and Marvel Entertainment this year (though Jersey Mike’s and Honda were announced prior to the Twitch deal’s official announcement).
The last 18 months have seen a significant increase in traditional commercials starring esports personalities. Last year, two Virtus.pro players were featured in ads for Head & Shoulders and Gillette. Kia produced a commercial which featured the League of Legends European Championship (LEC) commentary team, and popular streamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins has starred in commercials for a number of brands including Samsung, adidas, and the NFL.
