League/Tournament Brands:

  • Complexity Gaming and Spacestation Gaming will both have in-game esports items in Rocket League.
  • The revenue-sharing pilot program launched earlier this year, and gives teams a 30% cut of their respective item sales. A percentage also goes to players as a prize pool bonus.
  • Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS) Season 8 began league play this past weekend, with $1M+ USD in total prizing for the season.

Complexity Gaming and Spacestation Gaming will both have branded esports added to Rocket League, publisher Psyonix announced today.

The teams are the latest to join Rocket League’s revenue-sharing pilot program, which launched in April with 11 teams involved. Fans can buy branded car decals, wheels, and banners using in-game currency, which must be purchased with real money. The new teams’ items will be added on Oct. 14.

Complexity Gaming has fielded a professional Rocket League team since March 2018, although its squad played in the lower-tier Rocket League Rival Series team last season. Now, the team is back in the European Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS). Spacestation Gaming has had a North American RLCS team since April 2019, after previously fielding Rocket League rosters in 2018.

The revenue-sharing pilot program awards 30% of sales to each respective team, with a further percentage of sales available to RLCS players as a prize pool bonus. Teams such as Cloud9, G2 Esports, Team SoloMid, and NRG Esports are already part of the program, but so are Splyce and Evil Geniuses—two organizations that have left professional Rocket League since the program began.

The Esports Observer has asked Psyonix whether those teams will be removed from the program, as well as whether a team must be in the RLCS for any certain amount of time before being eligible to join the program. For example, the Pittsburgh Knights announced last week that it had acquired a North American RLCS team. We will update this story if we hear back from Psyonix.

RLCS Season 8 began league play this past weekend, and will award more than $1M across the entire season and all regions—including Oceania and South America, which are operated by regional organizers. The season will culminate with the RLCS World Championship in Madrid, Spain, on Dec. 13-15.
