Rocket League is going free-to-play “this summer,” according to an announcement Tuesday from developer Psyonix Studios. Gameplay for the soccer-meets-driving game will remain the same, according to the developer, but will receive tweaks to in-game menus and other aesthetic aspects.
The most noteworthy change will be that the free-to-play PC version of Rocket League will move exclusively to the Epic Games Store, and will be removed from Steam. The developers stressed that this change in the way the game is purchased will not affect any items purchased or progress earned for current Rocket League owners.
Other promised features include legacy items and rewards for current owners, cross-platform play (which includes Steam users who already purchased the game), improvements to tournaments and competitions, and more.
Psyonix has made a number of moves related to Rocket League and its esports competitions over the last several months. In June it announced a change in format to the Rocket League Championship Series to an open circuit; this followed a list of issues teams participating in the league sent to Psyonix in May.
Earlier this month Psyonix revealed that global gaming festival and tournament organizer DreamHack is its new production partner for the next season of the Rocket League Championship Series, RLCS Season X.
