Today, Tencent-owned League of Legends developer Riot Games announced that it has acquired game developer Hypixel Studios. The studio, which is planning to release its debut title, the community-powered block game Hytale in November 2021, will continue working as an independent studio while leveraging Riot Games’ technology, resources, and expertise.
Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.
Hypixels Studios was founded in 2018 with support from an advisory group of angel investors, including Riot Games, former Lionsgate President Peter Levin, former pro gamer and Plays.tv CEO Dennis “Thresh” Fong, and former Blizzard Entertainment Chief of Content Rob Pardo. The founders of the studio, Simon Collins-Laflamme and Philippe Touchette, created the Hypixel Network, a Minecraft minigame server, in 2013, which is now managed by Hypixel Studios and reached 18M unique players earlier this month.
