NRG Esports announced Tuesday the first in a series of activations related to its naming rights deal with insurance company The General, its Rocket League team, and The General’s popular spokesperson, NBA Hall of Famer, and NRG investor Shaquille O’Neal.
The first activation will give fans the opportunity to vote on four jersey designs beginning July 6, with the design that receives the most votes being revealed at the start of Rocket League Championship Series Season 11, which begins in August. Voting ends on July 20 and the winning jersey will be announced on July 21. NRG plans a variety of fan-based activations over the next several months.
Shaq read the following prepared statement during an interview with TEO on Wednesday (to be published later this week): “I’m thrilled to announce that starting Tuesday, July 6, fans can vote on The General NRG’s new jersey design, which will debut during the start of Season 11. Fans can head to thegeneral.com/NRG to vote on four of the jersey designs. Don’t forget to vote daily.”
The naming rights deal was announced in April and was put together with the help of Shaq, who has an investment in NRG and has been a spokesperson of the car insurance company for the last six years. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but NRG’s Rocket League team will officially be called “The General Insurance NRG,” with team players outfitted in “specialized The General-branded NRG jerseys for all events.” NRG’s The Grid broadcast will also be sponsored by The General Insurance during the Rocket League Championship Series weekly tournament circuit.
