Today Activision Blizzard revealed initial details for its Call of Duty: Mobile esports plans. The Call of Duty: Mobile World Championship 2020 will kick off on April 30 with an initial qualifying stage. Activision Blizzard has secured Sony Xperia as a presenting sponsor for the competition.
The first stage of the competition will take place through an in-game event where players will earn the right to advance to the next stage based on their individual performance. Those that move on will then create teams to compete in “Stage 2 and beyond” with details including prizing, rules, and broadcast platforms to be revealed at a later date.
The initial qualifying structure is similar to that used by Supercell for the initial stages of building its Clash Royale League, which eventually included top level esports organizations selecting players based on their performance in the individual qualifiers. Notably, at this point there appears to be no direct tie-in with the Call of Duty League or its teams. Activision Blizzard instead appears to be treating Call of Duty: Mobile as a distinct ecosystem, using a structure that is more familiar to mobile users.
