North American sports broadcaster TUDN and Liga BBVA MX, Mexico’s top flight football league, have joined forces for the eLiga MX by BBVA Tournament.

The FIFA 20 tournament will see players from all Liga MX clubs compete in a 17-match season which will mirror the 2020 Clausura schedule.

The top eight teams from the regular season will advance into a single-elimination playoff bracket where the champion of the competition will be crowned.

Juan Carlos Rodriguez, President of Sports at Univision, commented on the tournament in a release: “We are excited to be able to work with our partners at Liga MX to bring this competition to our fanáticos during these unprecedented times. Our goal is for this tournament to serve as an outlet that can unite our community in a whole new way around the sport of soccer. We hope our fans enjoy the broadcast and the opportunity to see their favorite players battle it out like never before.”

The inception of the tournament comes about from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic which has put the vast majority of sporting leagues and competitions on hold for the foreseeable future.

Coverage of the tournament is to begin on April 10th. Three players from each Liga MX club will take part, with each match having live play-by-play, pre-game, and post-game coverage from TUDN.

Esports Insider says: The creation of this online tournament follows the trend of several other sports using games and their ability to be played online to provide competition and the chance for fans to continue supporting their favourite teams. It’s cool to see, frankly.
