LEC Summer Finals in Malmö Canceled, League Will Return to Studio – The Esports Observer|home of essential esports business news and insights

The League of Legends European Championship (LEC) will not hold its summer finals in the city of Malmö, Sweden, due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This marks the second roadshow event cancellation for the league this year, after the Spring finals in Budapest were called off in March.

When the regular season resumes on June 12, production will return to the LEC studio in Berlin, Germany. The Spring season had to move to an online remote-setup midway, and while players will still compete from their respective training centers, a skeleton crew of production staff will be present while adhering to updated health and safety precautions.

Riot Games plans to increase the amount of staff working in the studio through the summer. The goal is to eventually welcome back teams and press, but no timeline could be provided at this point. Berlin state authorities have eased various lockdown measures on shops, bars, and restaurants, but event spaces are still largely closed.

Sweden did not impose COVID-19 lockdown measures, and currently has more confirmed cases and deaths than neighboring Scandanavian countries. In its announcement, Riot stated that it is currently exploring other options for the LEC Summer finals, with more details to be shared in the near future.
