The upcoming Summer Split for the top League of Legends competitions in Europe (LEC) and North America (LCS) will reward viewers with in-game items and promotions from brand partners. These “Drops” will occur around specific esports match moments, such as Baron steals, pentakills, or a historic instant specific to one or more of the teams competing.
Going live during the third week of the upcoming Split, rewards can only be attained by watching live on the watch.lolesports.com platform. These rewards will include in-game items such as skin shards, chromas, prestige points, and Clash tickets, as well as promotions from league partners. Riot Games stated it plans to expand the program to other leagues later on.
The Drops follow previous esports-related products, such as Match Rewards, which offer items to players who watch a specific number of matches; or the Pro View; a premium viewing option for fans to watch the stream of a specific player.
Last week, Riot unveiled in-game banners, which allow esports brand partners to advertise within the League of Legends game map for the first time.
