Today, Riot Games announced an advancement in its deal with Mastercard, the exclusive financial services partner of the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS), that will see the payments and technology company sponsor the Mastercard-powered “LCS Player of the Week Award” (POTW). The announcement today by Riot also details a new partner who will launch an all-new digital experience for LCS fans later this year.
A POTW segment will air each Monday night at the conclusion of the Monday Night League games. LCS casters and other Riot staff members will get together and vote to award the POTW. Each player that wins the POTW will receive a 3D model of themself.
In 2018, Mastercard signed a multi-year deal with Riot Games to be a global sponsor of League of Legends esports. As the exclusive global payment services partner of League of Legends, Mastercard and Riot mainly focused on the three biggest events: the Mid-Season Invitational, the All-Star Event, and the World Championship.
LCS’ newest partner, GreenPark Sports (GS), is set to bring a different digital experience to fans. GS has created mobile games that will allow fans of esports to compete with each other, and win prizes.
Fans of esports teams will be able to go to the GS game site and create an avatar that can be given skins to show their favorite team fandom. With prop bets and trivia games, fans can win “unique items” related to their favorite team to place on those avatars.
“There is going to be a progressive reveal leading up to launch, but I can tell there will be a strategic prediction component where you are collecting virtual cards which allow you to make types of predictions,” said Ken Martin, CEO and co-founder of GS. “Predictions like who is going to win, who will get first tower, etc There will be a lot of things to bet on in order to win virtual cards and prizes.
However, this product is still under development and testing and we’re looking forward to sharing more news about the game soon.”
