On Jan. 1 Italian apparel brand Kappa announced on Chinese social media Weibo that it had signed a title sponsorship deal with Chinese esports organization Royal Never Give-Up’s (RNG) Dota 2 squad. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed at the time of writing.
According to the short announcement, RNG Dota 2 team has been rebrand and added Kappa alongside its team name to become “Kappa. RNG Dota 2.” The new name will be in use effective immediately. Further details related to the deal were not disclosed.
This could be the first non-endemic sponsorship deal for an esports team signed in 2020. It also means the apparel sponsorship between Chinese apparel brand Li-Ning and RNG’s Dota 2 team has expired.
According to a post from RNG Dota 2 Weibo on Jan. 2, RNG did not name Li-Ning in its sponsor list. At the time of writing, RNG’s Dota 2 team has five sponsors, including Kappa, Laoshan Beer, smartphone brand Hongmo, Logitech, and China Citic Bank’s credit card service.
