Huawei Named Sponsor, Phone Provider for Vodafone 5G ESL Mobile Open Finals

The Vodafone 5G ESL Mobile Open Grand Finals will be “powered by” Huawei phones and 5G technology, ESL announced. Competitors will play on Huawei Mate 20X 5G smartphones using Vodafone’s 5G network.

ESL’s international competition series will culminate in the Grand Finals Sept. 28-29 during Milan Games Week at Milano Fiera Rho. The Vodafone 5G ESL Mobile Open will feature arcade racing title Asphalt 9: Legends and multiplayer battle royale title PUBG MOBILE.

Five Huawei Mate 20X 5G smartphones will be given as prizes along with the existing prize pool of €165K EUR ($182.6K USD).

The Vodafone 5G ESL Mobile Open Grand Finals will be the first international competitive esports tournament played live using a 5G network, ESL claims. Announced in March, the series centers on promoting 5G technology for gaming. In this case, ESL is calling attention to Huawei’s Kirin 5G chipset and Vodafone’s 5G network in Milan.

“Implementing 5G cellular network technology together with our brand partner Vodafone opens up new opportunities in esports, empowering us to broaden the audience and widen it to casual gamers as well,” said Bernhard Mogk, SVP sales & business development at ESL in a release. “At the same time, we’re expanding further in the field of mobile esports, magnifying the impact on every gaming platform possible and thereby reaching more fans and potential players.”

ESL’s partnership with Huawei officially kicked off during gamescom Aug. 20-24, the company said. In 2018, Vodafone signed on as a premium partner for Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) and ESL One events in Europe.

The Vodafone 5G ESL Mobile Open finals, will take place on September 29th and 28th  The tournament entails two of the most popular online mobile games up to date: the arcade racer Asphalt 9: Legends, and the multiplayer battle royale title, PUBG MOBILE.

ESL, the world’s largest esports company, and Huawei Technologies Ltd., the global technology leader, today announced a new partnership that will see the HUAWEI Mate 20X 5G power the Vodafone 5G ESL Mobile Open finals. The HUAWEI Mate 20X 5G smartphone will be used by all 56 contenders during the finals to deliver superior mobile performance, device cooling and long-lasting battery life, all underpinned by the partnership with Huawei initially kicked-off at gamescom, the world’s largest gaming exhibition fair.
