Virtuix’s Omni Arena virtual reality esports tournament will return for 2020 with a doubled prize pool of $100K USD, the company announced today.
HP will also return as a sponsor, although fellow 2019 sponsor HTC is no longer onboard. In addition to cash prizes, winning teams will also receive HP’s Reverb VR Headset. According to Virtuix, the 2019 competition drew more than 1,000 players across 12 countries.
Omni Arena is a location-based VR shooter experience in which players strap into Virtuix’s motion platform hardware, which lets them physically walk in place to make their in-game character move around the environment. Players also don a VR headset and wield motion controllers, and the four-player teams battle against rivals for control of the leaderboard.
“We are excited to participate in the Omni Arena esports contest series,” said HP’s Global Head of Virtual Reality for Location-Based Entertainment, Joanna Popper, in a release. “Virtuix has built a competitive gaming experience that requires both video-gaming skills and physical fitness. Such active esports offer a unique way for entertainment venues to reach a new audience of gamers, build a community of frequent players, and showcase the groundbreaking technology that HP is known for.”
