In addition, Westerling will focus on expanding the data market by helping regulated sportsbooks incorporate esports into their strategy.
The newly appointed Chief Sales Officer said: “I have been with the company since the beginning, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see how GRID has emerged as a clear market leader. I am looking forward to continuing working with the team and Moritz Maurer who, with his passion and comprehensive understanding of the market we operate in, inspired me to take the bet on esports as the future of sports betting.”
Westerling has over 15 years of experience working in the regulated betting industry with roles that catered to various areas of the data value chain in a wagering context. His expertise also focuses on regulatory frameworks and integrity challenges.
Prior to joining GRID, Westerling worked in traditional sports for companies such as RunningBall (now Stats Perform), InPlay Sports Data and Betgenius. Westerling’s transition to esports started in 2015, with him later joining Global Gaming Group as a Commercial Counsel.

Moritz Maurer, CEO of GRID Esports, added: “Mikael has been an invaluable member of our team since the inception of GRID and the introduction of the CSO role recognises the strong foundation that was built over the past four years.
“GRID is built on a vision that values the potential of data in a digital sport – Mikael was one of the first to align with this direction and has established himself as a leading voice in the industry.
“We are confident Mikael’s expertise and knowledge will serve GRID’s ambitious plans well for this year and beyond as we execute together on our strategy to leverage official data as the centrepiece to betting products that will advance the industry.’’
Esports Insider says: Due to his years of experience and previous involvement in GRID’s operations, Mikael Westerling seems a fitting candidate for the role of Chief Sales Officer. Moreover, Westerling’s expertise will benefit GRID in its aim to take advantage of the high interest in esports betting and further upgrade its data offering.
