Berlin-based esports organization G2 Esports has signed a deal with Mastercard in advance of this weekend’s League of Legends World Championship finals. Last year, Mastercard became a sponsor of all major League of Legends international events, including the World Championship. The credit card company expanded its deal with Riot Games to include the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) in August of this year.

Similar to its initial deal with Riot, Mastercard’s partnership with G2 will focus on providing fans with unique experiences such as meet-and-greets, and behind-the-scenes access. Additionally, a new entry in Mastercard’s “Together Start Something Priceless” video series will focus on Michael Winther, father of G2 player Rasmus “Caps” Winther. Winther’s father has become a popular figure in League of Legends esports due to his frequent attendance at matches and emphatic support of his son.

“As G2 prepares to face off at the monumental League of Legends World Championship Finals, we are excited to provide the League of Legends community exclusive Mastercard experiences that bring fans closer to the teams and players they admire,” said Jeannette Lindo, SVP marketing and communications Europe, Mastercard. “By partnering with G2 Esports we will be able to deepen our engagement with the esports passion and build upon our vision of bringing powerful content and priceless experiences to fans.”

This weekend, G2 Esports will face off against Chinese favorite FunPlus Phoenix, potentially becoming the first European League of Legends world champion since 2011 (the first championship in the game’s history). Should G2 win, it will also become the first team in LoL history to win the Grand Slam-winning all four international and regional championships in a single year.
