- Competitive mobile gaming continues to gain momentum through esports and mainstream attention with celebrity partnerships.
A new celebrity mobile gaming series called “Brawl with the Stars” debuted on Patrick “Chief Pat” Carney’s YouTube channel on Friday. Mobile developers often use celebrities as spokespeople but drawing a line between TV/movie stars and mobile esports could help secure the platform’s place in the mainstream consciousness.
As the name suggests, “Brawl with the Stars” features celebrity guests who play Supercell’s
game Brawl Stars under the coaching of Tribal Gaming CEO and content creator Patrick “Chief Pat” Carney. The first episode features Finn Wolfhard and Caleb McLaughlin, two actors from the Netflix series, Stranger Things. Guests play Brawl Stars alongside Carney, who then coaches them to achieve the highest score and the most trophies as possible. Guests’ scores and trophies will be placed on a leaderboard so celebrities can try to claim the top position.
“I’ve worked with Supercell for the last six years on a number of projects, and this one was definitely unique,” Carney told The Esports Observer. “Earlier this year, they shared with me that they were looking for a way to pair celebrities from the entertainment world with top Supercell content creators to produce some unique content.”

Celebrity association may not be a new concept for mobile games in general, but as mobile esports gains momentum in the competitive ecosystem, the lines between mainstream entertainment and pro gaming will continue to blur.
“In recent years, we’ve seen quite a few entertainers enter the gaming and content creation space—with a number of entertainers even creating gaming content on their own channels,” said Carney. “Personally, I’ve done a few collaborations WWE and NBA athletes for my YouTube channel, and I think more and more we’ll see different entertainers cast their net into the gaming world.”
Prior to founding Tribe Gaming in 2017, Carney amassed over 2.5M YouTube subscribers with Clash Royale
“I truly believe that mobile esports is a future pillar of the esports ecosystem, added Cerney. “With over 2.2B mobile gamers globally, and high-quality mobile games being increasingly released, the accessibility of mobile is overwhelmingly powerful. It’s not a matter of if, but when we’ll see mobile truly breakthrough into the mainstream, both for esports and content creation.”
