Irelia is one of the more terrifying champions to go against in the Top Lane in League of Legends. Her quick movement and insane kill potential early make for a tough time for most Top Laners. The question is, how do you take her down? Here are three of the best Irelia counters in League of Legends.
Malphite
Despite being a tank, an old but reliable champion, Malphite does pretty well in Irelia if you know what you are doing. Malphite with Q cannot only poke her down but also provides a small amount of movement speed, so you can position yourself away from Irelia so she cannot Q onto you. The key in this lane is to frustrate the hell out of Irelia. You need to scale up and get some items with mana, as Malphite is generally a high-mana-cost champion with low base mana. Play around her passive and don’t take long-trades as she will win out due to her added attack speed from her passive.
Warwick
Surprisingly Warwick is the best champion to play into Irelia on Patch 14.6, according to Mobalytics. Although you do not normally want to fight up close with Irelia, Warwick is one of those champions that can match her sustain in lane and will often than not win the matchup if played correctly. Look to lock her down with CC and continue to chunk her out. Once you have your first item, you will be off to the races. To be extra ‘cheesy,’ Warwick players can take Barrier in this match-up, which will often catch a Top Laner not paying attention off guard.
Sett
Like with Malphite, Sett is one of the more frustrating matchups for Irelia. With Irelia relying on her Q to stack her passive, this often means you will be shoved in. This is where Sett wants to be, as you will be able to fight her without her passive being stacked to six which is where she is at her deadliest. Her W can block a lot of what you want to do, so be sure to use E, which will stun her before attacking Irelia. Sett is much stronger than Irelia in the early game, so look to apply some pressure onto her from the get-go.

Although Yorick is one of the more irritating top lane champions in League of Legends, he does not fair well against Irelia with one of the worst win-rates on Patch 14.6. Irelias quick movement is a pain for Yorick to handle, as she is able to quickly stack up her passive b Q’ing to his ghouls for maximum stacks quickly. Even when Yoricks ultimate is up, Irelia will have no trouble dealing with the healing and drain damage taken from Yorick, as she will heal it up her self by the time both champions have their first components. Once she has Blade of the Ruined King, it is lights out for Yorick; she will be able to out sustain you and will win the top lane matchup.
