ONE Esports to Launch With Tokyo, Jakarta, and Singapore Events

Asian mixed martial arts promotor ONE Championship has revealed the first events for its planned esports endeavor, ONE Esports. Two Dota 2 Database-Link-e1521645463907 “World Pro Invitationals” will be held in Singapore and Jakarta, in December 2019 and April 2020, respectively, each with $500K prize pools. In addition, a TEKKEN Database-Link-e1521645463907 and Street Fighter Database-Link-e1521645463907 tournament will be held in Tokyo this October, as part of ONE Championship’s 100th event.

ONE Championship has also named Carlos Alimurung as CEO. Prior to this appointment, Alimurung was chief business officer for esports competition platform Battlefy Database-Link-e1521645463907. He has also held executive positions at Univision and LG North America. 

In a LinkedIn post, ONE Championship co-founder and CEO Chatri Sityodtong said his company had partnered with production company PGL for its esports events. PGL, headquartered in Bucharest, has hosted some of Southeast Asia’s most notable Dota 2 events, including the Kuala Lumpur Major Database-Link-e1521645463907 and Manila Major Database-Link-e1521645463907

ONE Esports was first announced in November of last year in partnership with Japanese agency Dentsu, which will realize sales and business opportunities for the competition. Along with its key partners including Razer Database-Link-e1521645463907, ONE Championship plans to commit up to $50M into its esports series. More details regarding the 2019-2020 season, including additional game titles, will be revealed in the coming months.

ONE Championship was launched in 2011, and has to date raised over $250M from companies including Sequoia Capital, Heliconia Capital, and Temasek Holdings. In December of last year, the company announced an exclusive multi-year contract with Turner Sports, and Sityodtong has previously stated in an interview with Sports Business Journal that the company is looking to host MMA events in North America.
